Akkeshi Distillery Progress: Website Live

Post by Stefan Van Eycken, Tokyo

Last year, we were thrilled to break the news that a new distillery – Akkeshi Distillery – would be set up in Japan. Since then, there has been very little information about the project and most of the spotlight has been on a new distillery that is being set up elsewhere in the country, Shizuoka Distillery (for more on this, check out our contribution to the forthcoming Malt Whisky Yearbook). However, Akkeshi Distillery launched their official website and – uncharacteristically for a Japanese distillery, but this is great news for Japanese whisky fans worldwide – it is bi-lingual.
It’s very different from the usual PR nonsense that not-yet-existing distilleries usually spout when launching their website. Very thorough and technical, there is a wealth of information to be found on the website. It is also clear from the website that the project is much more ambitious than most people originally assumed. One hurdle that remains to be cleared is obtaining the distilling license, something the company behind the distillery (Kenten Co. Ltd.) is hoping to do by September 2016. We will provide you with more in-depth information about this exciting new distillery in the months to come. In the meantime, head on over to their website and explore their plans for the future!
